Disater Recorvery: Jackson/Madison County
Disaster Recovery Services is a United Way-driven partnership that first came into existence in 1999 in Madison County. It promoted the collaboration of disaster relief agencies, other non-profits, government agencies, churches and businesses in an effort to help families recover from a massive tornado that devastated the local community. Funds donated to United Way were combined with other local financial and volunteer resources to fill the gaps when FEMA, TEMA, private insurance and other assistance could not meet victim needs. United Way leadership renewed this partnership in Madison County in 2003 in the wake of another major tornado and established it in Dyer County as a coordinated response to tornadoes in that community in 2004 and 2006. The DRS concept has been praised locally and nationally as a successful model for other communities that seek to recover from their own natural disasters. |
