Building on Success: A “Double Header” Learning Opportunity
Members and friends of the Southwest Council on Children & Youth: The Southwest Council is pleased to offer a special learning opportunity about making community-based services more successful.... Building on Success: A “Double Header” Learning Opportunity for promising community service organizations and programs about how to survive and thrive. Most communities have programs that seem to be improving outcomes for the children, youth and families they serve. In some cases, innovative programs are “home grown” by community groups or nonprofit organizations working to improve the lives of neighborhood residents - often developing these services with time-limited grants. Other initiatives are pilot projects launched by governments or foundations to test promising approaches to challenging problems such as youth violence, chronic poverty or lagging academic achievement among poor and minority students. All too often, however, these successful programs operate at a level that is far too small to have a community-wide impact, or the program’s future is uncertain with the end of initial funding. Local leaders who seek to maintain and expand such programs typically face significant obstacles, including barriers to replication as well as ever-present financial constraints. To be successful, they need focused strategies for sustaining programs and taking them to scale. Here's the line-up for this double-header… ● Vicki Lake of West Tennessee Healthcare shares her renowned grantsmanship expertise in The Bucks Stopped Here - Now What - a look at sustainability. Being ready for a future after the last grant dollar begins with the first one. Sustainability planning can be the difference between here today and gone tomorrow. ● Expanding successful community initiatives in order to serve more residents - “scaling” services for broader community impact - will be the focus of Taking Community Iniatives to Scale a live, national audioconference for local elected officials and other community leaders from the National League of Cities. Our event provides a participation site for you to join these speakers who will highlight key strategies and opportunities for local leaders to expand successful programs. Who should attend: -- city and county mayors, county commissioners, city councilman and other local elected officials -- local government staff… persons concerned about community and economic development -- managers for community- and faith-based organizations -- professionals from family strengthening, youth development, child welfare, children's mental health, and juvenile justice service organizations in the community -- all child advocates and other citizens concerned about the well-being of children and families Seating is limited, please call or e-mail to confirm your place... the event flyer is attached, and particulars follow... and please help us to promote this event by forwarding this message to all who might be interested or printing-and-sharing the flyer. --- Rodger -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- WHAT: Building on Success WHEN: Thursday, October 18 1:15 PM - 2:30 PM WHERE: Lowell Thomas Building - 2nd Floor, Conference Room B 225 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Jackson COST: None, seating is limited, please call or e-mail to confirm your place CONTACT: Rodger Jowers… 731.423.6545… Rodger.Jowers@state.tn.us Rodger D.
